There IS crying… Part II

Ah Suzyn. I’ve always liked you. I’ve certainly grown to respect you. I have often said I feel that I (yep, that’s right) should be named your successor on the air with John Sterling, as you have what I would consider to be my ultimate dream job. And because I would kick some serious broadcasting ass. I actually ENJOY that you are maybe a little too biased for a broadcast (hey, you’re paid by the Yanks, who cares?) and too emotional at times on the air. (To be fair, all the YES announcers suffer from the same problem). I’ve often defended you to other (less enlightened) fans. I will continue to do so… However, just for the record, you probably should draw the line at crying on air during a broadcast. It tends to upset the emotionally-stunted male fans.

Don’t remember crying? Well, you must listen to THIS snippet of broadcast from last night (be patient, it takes time to load), which I found reported on Awful Announcing. I agree that it wasn’t your best moment… but hell, you’re Suzyn Waldman. You’ll cry if you damn well want to, and everyone else can go to hell.

Look, I’m with you girl! We’re all hurting here. Knowing that Joe may have to leave the Bombers now is horrible. Like a nightmare. Much worse than losing the division series itself. Working so closely with him and the coaching staff over the past couple of years probably made it worse for you to think about. Seeing other staff members starting to lose it in the manager’s office might have been just too much for you. I get it. The end of an era and all that… but you couldn’t wait until a commercial break? Now you have to deal with all the backlash, in the midst of your sorrow…. because you showed weakness. Because you are human. Broadcasting professionalism be damned, you were not afraid to have an on-air breakdown and good for you. But now be ready for the outcry. Guys don’t like this sort of thing in their sports. What I love MOST about you though? …that you don’t care.

And well Suzyn… LET the world mock you for crying. LET them all call you unprofessional and sappy. So be it! Whatever, right? They say that maybe you did some damage in the perception of female sportscasters in the MLB… You don’t care what people say! You’re Suzyn Waldman! You’re a pioneer in female sportscasting on so many levels. You looked breast cancer in the face and LAUGHED. You’re an inspiration (sappy or not) and I think you should continue to do things your way.

Besides, more than a few of us female baseball fans were sobbing right along with you. Shhhh… don’t tell.
